Bhubaneswar, Sept. 16: The declaration of the 57th National film awards has left the entire state cheering.

Oriya sound recordist Subash Sahoo has claimed his second National award for his work in Vishal Bharadwaj’s Kaminey.

Sahoo, a sound engineer and recordist from Film and Television Institute (FTII) Pune had won his first National award for Bharadwaj’s Omkara in 2008.

“I’m delighted to win the award for the second time. I owe my success to my director Vishal,” says Sahoo, who is presently at his village Baluriya in Kendrapara.

“It feels great that people in my state are noticing my work due to these awards,” he says.

Starting his career as an Electronics and Communication engineer, Sahoo quit his job in Bhubaneswar and left for FTII in 1991.

He has been working in the Hindi film industry since 1994.

“I have worked for the sound of more than 50 films. Sadly, not many in the industry recognise the importance of technical details,” he says adding the he was lucky to work under directors who paid attention to the sound recording of the films.

“I have worked with Shyam Benegal for a series of short stories and with Sudhir Mishra for Khoya Khoya Chand, Navdeep Singh for Manorama Six Feet Under, Dibakar Banerji for Khosla Ka Ghosla,” Sahoo says.

“All of them have been very careful about the sound designing of the film,” he adds.

He worked as sound designer for Atithi Tum Kab Jaoge and Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai.

The sound engineer believes that the advent of the sync sound technology has increased the importance of sound designers in films.

“It’s easier than dubbing and is done during the shooting itself. But they need the right hands for it,” he explains. “After all, in an audio-visual medium, audio comes first,” he smiles.

Sahoo works for about 18-20 hours every day. His family includes his wife, a nine-year-old daughter and a one-and-half-year-old son, is settled in Mumbai.

But he regularly visits his village to spend time with his parents and siblings.

He says that Oriyas are doing well in the technical spheres of the Mumbai film industry.

“Debasish Mishra, Manas, Chiranjeev Nanda and Nihar Samal who worked for 3 Idiots are established in the sound designing sector in Mumbai,” says Sahoo.

Whenever he gets time he loves reading novels and playing cricket and football.

But it is watching movies that he loves.

“I love watching world movies, Yasujiro Ozo’s Tokyo stories and Ritwik Ghatak’s Subarnarekha being favourites,” he says.

He has also directed a couple of documentaries under his production house Time and Space pictures.

Green Summer that he made for UNDP was based on the food problem in KBK districts of the state.

Preparation of a bride is another documentary that he has worked on. It’s based on his mother Suchitra Sahoo.

Right now Sahoo is working on films such as Yeh Faasle, Spirit and Sahi Dhande Galat Bande.
