Science extravaganza

A two-day science model exhibition was held at Sai International School, Bhubaneswar recently. There were 122 models on display with more than 600 students taking part in the event. Students from Class VI to VIII displayed their projects on the first day and those from Classes IX to XI showcased their science skills through their models on the second. Experts were invited from the National Institute of Science Education and Research, Bhubaneswar, to judge the exhibits. Robotics students grabbed eyeballs for their projects. While one robot could follow a line to detect any obstacle on the way, another could pick up a ball or respond like a human being. Some extraordinary models on display were on how to make plastics into roads, conservation of sea turtles and wastewater management by students of Class VI to VIII. Senior students also created innovative projects on the use of solar cells, generating gravity in space and making a self-sufficient space colony for humans.

Little scientists

Ayesha Patnaik, a Class VIII student of BJEM School, Bhubaneswar, and her team mates won a lot of acclaim at the Children’s Science Congress held as part of the recently concluded centenary session of the Indian Science Congress in Calcutta. More than 100 selected child scientists from all over the country took part in the event and presented a wide variety of scientific projects and ideas. Ayesha and her team, led by their teacher, Arun Kumar Pati, showcased a modern gas stove hybridised with a solar cooker, which can reduce the consumption of cooking gas to around 30 per cent. Their project, titled “Save LPG, Save Money”, assumes significance in the wake of the present crisis over repeated hikes in the price of cooking gas.

Remembering Vivekananda

DAV Public School (Chandrasekharpur), Bhubaneswar, conducted an inter-DAV quiz competition on January 11, the eve of Swami Vivekananda’s 150th birth anniversary to inculcate his values among youngsters. The DAVs at Pokhariput, Unit-VIII, Kalinganagar, and the host school took part in the event. Quizmaster Fredrick Wright kept the participants on their toes with a challenging set of questions based on Vivekananda’s life. Sourav Sahoo, Saswat Mishra and Spandan Senapati, students of the host school, were declared champions. The team from Pokhariput, represented by Swagat Panda, Subhradeep Samantray and Satwik Das, finished second. The winners received a bunch of books and certificates of merit. On the occasion, the Ramakrishna Mission had also organised a book exhibition on the school premises. Students staged a play on the life of the philosophical leader.

High drama

A group of students from Kendriya Vidyalaya (Bondamunda), Rourkela, won the 8th inter-school multilingual short play competition for their play called Katha Ramakrishna Ki. The five-day event, held from January 8 to 12, attracted several schools in and around the city. Chinamaya Vidyalaya at Chhend won the runners-up award for their Shree Jagannath Mahaprabhu act.
