Bhubaneswar: The Jagannath Temple Administration on Tuesday decided to take over administrative control of the Lakshmi temple.

The temple administration took the decision after it was reported that servitors did not adorn goddess Lakshmi with gold jewellery on Thursday, which according Hindu calendar was an auspicious day.

The servitors claimed that it was difficult to handle the ornaments as most of them were broken and the temple administration did not get those repaired.

The incident has angered devotees of the goddess.

Chief temple administrator Pradeep Kumar Jena said: "We will soon formulate a guideline to streamline functioning of the Lakshmi temple. Every three months, it will be examined. If any flaws are detected, steps will be taken to revamp it."

Jena said: "All the jewellery of goddess Lakshmi will be counted and listed in the inventory. Earlier, the sevayats used to maintain a second storehouse at the temple. This will not be tolerated. Whatever gifts the goddess got will also be recorded."

"We will also take similar steps for other temples that exist on the premises of the shrine," he said.
