Cuttack, Jan. 6: Tension prevailed on the SCB Medical College and Hospital campus with students blocking the road near the institute protesting against a case filed by police against the head of nephrology department for allegedly misbehaving with a policeman on duty.

The police said Dr Chittaranjan Kar had allegedly misbehaved, threatened and made derogatory remarks against additional inspector-in-charge Abhimanyu Das over "illegal" parking on the campus this afternoon. Tension erupted after the police reached there to seize the doctor's car for illegal parking. On this, the medics opposed.

Mangalabag police lodged a case against Kar based on Das's complaint. In the evening, the medics staged a demonstration and blocked the main entrance to the hospital to protest against the police action. The incident occurred around 2:15pm when Das opposed arbitrary parking by Kar's driver in front of the nephrology department. Kar allegedly abused and threatened to transfer Das by using his political clout, sources said."We have registered a case under Indian Penal Code sections 341, 294, 186, 283 and 506 based on Das's complaint," said Mangalabag police station inspector-in-charge Arun Swain.Senior officials of the hospital, on the other hand, said efforts were on to pacify the students, who were demanding immediate withdrawal of the case against the head of the department."We condemn the misbehaviour shown to one of our senior police officials. The Odisha Police Association strongly condemn such act," said association secretary Jyotiranjan Samantray.

A fact-finding team would shortly conduct a detailed inquiry into the incident, and the police body will take appropriate action after discussing the matter with other members," Samantray said.

"Our departmental head had not parked his vehicle illegally as he was only getting down there to go to the department. The police official concerned had first misbehaved with the senior doctor," said president of SCB PG union Preetam Kar.
