Bhubaneswar, May 21: Tropical cyclone Roanu spared Odisha and moved towards Bangladesh today. All that the state experienced was intermittent rain and gusty winds. There have been no reports of any major damage caused by he cyclone.
However, with the cyclonic system weakening, the relief that it had brought from the sweltering heat has proved to be just a transient phenomenon. Weather pundits have predicted the return of severe heatwave condition in the state once again. Met experts said the mercury is likely to shoot up and touch the 40 degrees Celsius mark at many places across the state from Monday.
Met director Sarat Chandra Sahu told The Telegraph that the cyclonic storm Roanu did not cause much damage in the state but it certainly had changed the weather condition.
"Due to the wind pattern, the tropical cyclone skirted Odisha and made its landfall near Chittagong in Bangladesh," said Sahu.
According to the daily weather bulletin issued by the Met centre today, light rainfall is likely to take place at a few places in the state tomorrow. The weather is also expected to be squally.
"The wind pattern will change gradually and moisture will be missing, which will contribute to a rise in the mercury level at several places across the state. This kind of weather will continue till the end of this month," said another Met official.
Interestingly, the rain triggered by Roanu had lashed only the coastal pockets of the state for two consecutive days while the rest of the state continued to witness hot and humid weather conditions.
The mercury remained above the 40 degrees Celsius mark in as many as seven places across the state today despite the cool and breezy after-effects of the cyclone. Bhawanipatna sizzled at 44 degrees Celsius, the highest in the state, followed by Titilagarh at 43.5 degree Celsius. There was no rainfall reported anywhere in the state.
