New Delhi, Feb. 6: The National Human Rights Commission has issued notices to Odisha's chief secretary and director-general of police seeking reports on the series of alleged rapes in the state in January.
It also seeks information on the suicide of a minor after her family reached a compromise with the rapist's family.
The commission, in a directive on Friday, also asked its DIG (investigation) to get within three days preliminary facts of the case as alleged in a complaint filed by Supreme Court lawyer and rights Radhakanta Tripathy.
According to the complainant on January 31, unable to bear the ignominy, a rape victim allegedly committed suicide by setting herself on fire in Dhenkanal district.
The Class IX student took the extreme step after her neighbour allegedly raped her. But instead of acting against the culprit, the girl's family and family of the rapist signed a compromise note, which was submitted to the Town police station by the accused.
After the families signed the compromise note, the victim is learnt to have told her sisters of being hurt and humiliated, the petition said.
Tripathy cited the example of another case earlier filed by him.
This case took place in Bhadrak district where a minor girl was sexually assaulted in a government office on a Sunday and later, the father of the victim and the accused arrived at a mutual compromise and the case was reportedly closed in the criminal court.
