Problems galore in Resident Colony

Bhubaneswar, March 7: Choked drains, cracked buildings of government quarters and failure of the city bus service to touch the area are major problems bothering the residents of the Rental Colony in ward No. 10.

As if all these civic problems are not enough, a half-constructed community centre in the colony is still awaiting completion. The old community centre lying next to the incomplete new structure has no drinking water facility with the only tubewell on its premises lying defunct.

The buildings of the government quarters are in such a precarious state that residents wonder why their problems have not as yet attracted the attention of the general administration department.

“While the roofs of many balconies are damaged, plants are growing in the crannies in the walls at places. Wherever repairs have taken place, the work has been done shoddily,” said the councillor of ward No. 10, Samir Kumar Pradhan.

Many drains in the ward are yet to be desilted while some need repair. “At many points, drains have remained without repair for years and they need immediate attention,’’ said councillor Pradhan.

“There are more than 15,000 people living in the colony. But, the area is not connected with the rest of the city by any means of public transport. Other parts of the ward, such as CRPF, horticulture directorate, VIP area, Ekamra Villa and private plot area, are somehow connected with the public transport system, but Rental Colony is yet to be connected to any of the routes on which the city buses ply,” said Ratiranjan Mantri, a student and resident of Rental Colony.

A primary health centre (zonal clinic) under the Capital Hospital is functioning in the colony, but the doctor comes for only three hours in a day. “The doctor should come to the clinic at least twice a day. There should also be provisions for some indoor beds at the primary health centre,’’ Mantri added.
