Bhubaneswar, Sept. 5: Twin cities cops today asked the authorities of Utkal University to introduce a pass system for outsiders who want to enter the varsity campus.

They arrived at this decision after commissioner of police R.P. Sharma held discussions with the university authorities following a clash between two groups of students last evening.

Police said they had asked the university authorities to allow only those students on the campus who have identity cards. “The students and employees of the university must enter the campus with their identity cards. As students of other affiliated colleges and their parents need to visit the campus as well, the authorities need to provide them with passes. This would stop the former students and non-students from entering the campus,” said Sharma.

The police also asked the authorities to ensure tight security at all the three entry and exit points. The security of the university is, at present, being managed by 36 former defence personnel and one security officer hired through Army Placement Cell in June.

Six students were injured in a group clash on Wednesday evening. Following the clash, hundreds of students of the university accused non-students for the incident.

The university authorities have decided to close the main entrance after working hours. The security cell has been asked to fix the timings of closure of the main entrance to restrict unauthorised entry.

In another development, the superintendents of six boys’ hostels have resigned today alleging misbehaviour by the students last night. “This is not the first time that the hostel inmates have misbehaved with us. With frequent violence happening on campus, we are not feeling secure enough to stay on,” said a hostel superintendent.

The PG Council today decided to call off the student polls for the second consecutive year. “We have decided to call off the students’ polls for 2013-14 keeping an eye on the frequent student clashes and upcoming examinations,” said PG Council chairman P.K. Mishra.

The PG council has also decided to drive out from the various varsity boys’ hostels several former students and non-students. “After the hostel readmission process is complete, university authorities and police will drive away the non-students staying in hostels,” said Mishra.
