Bhubaneswar: Four labourers from Khurda, who had left for Malaysia in October, have alleged torture by their employers. Families of these labourers on Sunday approached the district collector with requests to make provisions for their return. The youths had left the village with one Kabi Barik who promised them decent jobs in Malaysia. However, they have now been calling up to inform their families about their pathetic condition, the families alleged. Bhubaneswar: Students of the Utkalmani Gopabandhu Homeopathic and Medical College in Rourkela on Sunday locked up the college gates for over two hours demanding removal of the principal. The students alleged that the principal was involved in some irregularities. BHUBANESWAR: Two persons were killed when two trucks collided head on at Kuniani on the National Highway-23 under Bonai police station in Rourkela on Sunday.The deceased were identified as Hemanta Pradhan and Mithun Pradhan. Both of them hail from Dhenkanal district. Bhubaneswar: State government on Sunday launched a drive against leprosy by flagging off a chariot that will move around 50 blocks of the state spreading awareness messages on leprosy and its cure in the selected leprosy-prone blocks. The chariot, named Samba Ratha, was flagged off by health minister Prasanna Acharya and women and child development minister Pramila Mallick in Bhubaneswar. Berhampur: Maoists have threatened to blow up the building of Bandhaguda Sri Jagannath Bidyapitha under Sheragada block in Hinjili constituency in Ganjam district. “The Maoists have pasted two posters on the gate of the school ordering its closure for a week from January 29 to February 6, 2011. They have threatened to blow the building with landmine if the school remains open during this time,” said the headmaster of the school. He has informed the incident to the block development officer, the Badagada police station and the collector of Ganjam. Many students left the school in panic after seeing the posters. Police have removed the posters. BHUBANESWAR: State’s first woman Grandmaster Kiran Manisha Mohanty was awarded the 18th Ekalabya Award at a function here on Saturday. Rural development minister B.K. Arukh presented the award for 2010 to Mohanty. The award carried a cash prize of Rs 1.5 lakh. Chess master Debasish Das and international woman rower Pratima Puhan were also felicitated on the occasion.
