Cops arrested, dismissed

Cuttack: Three police personnel, including one havildar and two constables, were arrested on Sunday and placed under suspension for allegedly facilitating a hardcore criminal to escape from court premises.

Havildar Shivananda Mallick, constable Harihar Sahu and Padmanabh Kar have been arrested on dereliction charges. Mallick and Sahu were on duty at the court while Kar was with the reserve police.

Police sources said that the accused, Sanjay Jena, had earlier given the cops a slip near high court on Saturday. ollowing the incident, a case was registered with Lalbag police.

All the three have been arrested under sections 120 (B), 221, 222, 223, 34 of the Indian Penal Code and produced before the court, police said.

Dacoits held

Berhampur: Police on Sunday foiled a robbery bid when they caught hold of eight dacoits. Town police and Gosani Nuagaon police took part in the operation. The police have seized a pistol, four rounds of bullets, bombs and two swords from the criminals.

Puja plan

Cuttack: The Mahanagar Peace Committee on Sunday conducted a meeting for smooth conduct of the upcoming Durga Puja.

This year the puja will be celebrated at 152 mandaps across the city. Officials of the Cuttack Municipal Corporation, district collector along with the heads of various puja committees were also present on the occasion.

Drought report

Bhubaneswar: Chief minister Naveen Patnaik will preside a meeting on Monday to take stock of the drought situation in different districts of the state. Eye estimation reports from 23 districts were already submitted and the reports of the remaining seven districts will be presented on Monday, after which a decision would be taken by the chief minister,” said Surya Narayan Patra, revenue minister.

One dead

Cuttack:A body was found at Banki with bullet wounds. The person was identified as Krushnachandra Das. Banki police has seized the body and started an enquiry. The murder was suspected to be linked to past rivalry.

Jumbo attack

Bhubaneswar:A herd of elephants have destroyed crops and nearly 30 houses near ifferent villages at Karanjia in Mayurbhanj district. These tuskers were on a rampage since the last 20 days.

'Although we have deployed manpower to dissuade the elephants, the animals appear again,” said Suryamani Patra, range officer of Karanjia range.

Molest slur

Sambalpur: The police arrested a principal of a school, Sridhar Biswal, for allegedly molesting a 10-year-old girl. He was arrested on the basis of a complaint lodged by a family member of the victim.
