Chlorine leak probe

Bhubaneswar: The forest and environment department on Thursday ordered a probe into the gas leakage accident at JK Paper Mill in Rayagarah. Minister Debi Prasad Mishra has also asked the director, environment to submit a detailed report on the incident. Twelve people were injured on Wednesday when chlorine gas leaked out in an accident. The injured were admitted to ESI Hospital. Later, one victim was shifted to a hospital in Visakhapatnam as his condition deteriorated.

Mob at IOCL

Paradip: A mob comprising mostly of contractual workers on Thursday attacked Central Industrial Security Force personnel, triggering tension in and around the Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL)’s oil refinery project near the port town. Security has been stepped with deployment of at least three platoons of armed police. There was complete disruption of construction activity on Thursday as enraged workers struck work in protest. Thursday's incident was the fallout of a dispute over the parking of two-wheelers.

Blank firing

Sambalpur: An incident of blank firing took place on Thursday near the city railway station in Dhanupali police limits. Six people on two bikes allegedly attacked Nardev Kumar Phul,55 , a contractor and resident of Khetrajpur. According to police, the accused demanded money from the contractor and when he refused to pay, they thrashed him. They also fired two rounds in the air to intimidate the victim. Dilip Kumar Deo, sub-divisional police officer of Sambalpur, said: “The assailants have fled. The attack may have been because of business rivalry.”

Cancer centre

Bhubaneswar: Urgent steps were sought at the annual general meeting of Acharya Harihar Regional Cancer Centre (AHRCC) on Thursday to transform the institute into a centre of excellence. In the last financial year, 23,010 patients were treated and 1,388 underwent surgery. A 30-year comprehensive development plan with an increase of 100 beds was also made. The centre now has 241 beds. There is also a proposal to introduce specialisation and super specialisation and technicians’ courses in cancer.

Revised salary

Bhubaneswar: Anganwadi workers will get a revised salary from August. They will also receive the arrears. According to a government decision, Anganwadi workers will get Rs 3,000 instead of Rs 1,500 as monthly salary while the salary of helpers has been hiked to Rs 1,500 from Rs 750.

Empanelment

Bhubaneswar: The state civil supplies and consumer welfare department has notified empanelment of suitable candidates as mediators for the consumer mediation advisory centre.
