Students injured in cracker burst
Bhubaneswar: Four students of Hirakhand High School in Sambalpur sustained serious burn injuries while bursting crackers. The students were on their way to school on Thursday morning when an unidentified person offered them the crackers.
The students have received about 25 per cent burn injuries. One of the students, Rajkumar Sahoo of Class IV, has lost his eyes in the mishap. Police are on the lookout for the person who handed them the crackers.
Bhubaneswar: Rourkela police on Thursday arrested a sarpanch for possessing illegal explosives. The residence of Chandiposh sarpanch, Srikant Samal, was raided early Thursday morning and explosives, including detonators and gelatin sticks, were found. Police suspect Samal of having Maoist connections. He is being interrogated. . Bhubaneswar: The adivasi mahasangh in Rayagada on Thursday held demonstrations protesting against police inaction in connection with the Bhagirathi Marandi missing case. The sangh members also demanded a CBI inquiry into the incident. Marandi, a councillor of Rourkela Municipality, went missing on December 20 under mysterious circumstances. Bhubaneswar: The Sambalpur police on Thursday arrested three persons in connection with the Kailash Majhi murder case. Majhi was shot at by the accused on the night of January 22 while he was attending a function. The trio have admitted to having committed the crime, said police. Past enmity was the motive behind the murder. Bhubaneswar: A demolition drive launched by Paradip district authorities faced protests by local dwellers who opposed the evictions. The locals alleged that no notices were served to them earlier. The government officials, however, continued with the demolition at the 10-acre government land that was encroached upon. Bhubaneswar: Carcasses of Olive Ridley turtles were spotted floating close to the beach on Thursday, much to the disgust of hundreds of tourists. The carcasses were within a three-kilometre radius of Digamarandi. “It smells bad and sends a bad message to tourists who come here from across the world. The district authorities should do something about it,” a tourist said.
