Kodala death toll rises

Berhampur: The police recovered the decomposed body of one Das Prakash, 35, who had been missing since the Kodala violence from Jagada Canal, on Tuesday. “Prakash was a resident of Ranger Bungalow Sahi at Kodala. His relatives, taking shelter at the Kalyan Mandap Kodala, identified the body,” said Sowbhagya Kumar Swain, inspector in-charge of Kodala police station. Local residents first saw the body floating in the canal. Earlier, two persons of the same community, including P. Rama, 25, and Kali, 37, were killed in the attack.

Floodwater

Sambalpur: The Hirakud Dam Authority released the first floodwater of the year from the Mahanadi river on Tuesday. “We have opened only one sluice gate. A quantity of 15,000 cubic feet water is being released through the sluice gate in every second. The water level is 607.83ft. After 24 hours, it can be decided whether the sluice gate will remain opened,” said Nilakantha Das, superintendent engineer of the Hirakud Dam Circle.

Woman Maoist

Keonjhar: A woman Maoist on Tuesday gave in before Keonjhar superintendent of police Ashish Kumar Singh. She was identified as Jayanti Mahanta alias Seema, 18, of Golaga. The police said Seema was working as an area committee member of Kalinganagar division of the outlawed CPI (Maoist). She joined the rebels in 2008 and was operating in Ghasipura, Harichandanpur, Telkoi and Banspal areas in Keonjhar district.

Vigilance raid

Bhubaneswar: Vigilance sleuths on Tuesday raided the city branch of Oriental Bank in connection with the cow-insurance scam. The department has also seized papers related to this scam. On the other hand, authorities of the Orissa Livestock Resources Development Society refuted their involvement in the incident. “We do not have any role in this scam. Some people have done this only by forging documents,” said Chittaranjan Mallick, in-charge of the society.

Woman hurt

Cuttack: A woman was injured after a ceiling fan had fallen on her at the paediatric ward at S.C.B. Medical College and Hospital here on Tuesday. The woman from Puri, identified as Arasi Behera, 30, sustained severe injuries on her head. The incident occurred at around 4pm, when she was sleeping along with her six-year-old niece at the paediatric ward. Following the incident, the fan was immediately replaced. However, the authorities could not be contacted on the issue.

Scheme appeal

Bhubaneswar: Orissa Pradesh Congress Committee president Niranjan Patnaik met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Tuesday and apprised him of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme scam that rocked the state. He told Singh that the CBI is inquiring into the irregularities in six districts of Orissa and has requested that the probe be extended to all 30 districts.
