One hurt in bombing

Bhubaneswar: One person was injured when two motorcycle-borne youths hurled two bombs at the shops in Siripur market on Sunday afternoon apparently to terrorise the traders. On being informed, Khandagiri police rushed to the spot and seized the remnants of the bombs. Deputy commissioner of police (DCP) Nitinjit Singh also visited the spot. Police sent the injured person to the hospital. Local residents said one of the accused was wearing a helmet, while the pillion-rider was called Makara Moharana. The injured person has been identified as Md Zaved Ali.

Assault slur

Balasore: Tension prevailed in Soro on Sunday following an alleged assault on the local block development officer (BDO) on Saturday evening. n the other hand, a woman zilla parishad member alleged that her modesty was outraged by the BDO. Two complaints have been lodged in regard to both the cases in the local police station. Fearing public outburst and law and order problem, the sub-divisional police officer has been camping in the block since Saturday.

Maoist nabbed

Berhampur: Sorada police arrested Pratap Chinnara, a Maoist, from Mandiapalli village, 8km from here on Sunday morning. “Pratap admitted his involvement with the Maoist organisation and was involved in the Asurabandha dacoity case under Sorada police limits on March 31. He hails from Parala village under Gop police station in Puri district,” Niranjan Behera, inspector in-charge, Sorada police station, said. Police forwarded him to a local court.

Arrest

Bhubaneswar: The accused duo of the June 22 murder of Prabodh Nayak, an LIC agent in Khandagiribari area were sent to jail on Sunday after their bail pleas were rejected. They were arrested on Saturday night by Khandagiri police. The accused are Nihar Kant Patra and Biranchi Narayan Paltasingh. They killed Prabodh alleging that he had been torturing his wife.

Temple loot

Berhampur: Masked dacoits looted gold and silver ornaments and emptied the ‘hundi’ of Goddess Mahurikalua under Digapahandi police limits near here on Saturday night. They also looted gold ornaments and cash from three family members who came to the temple from Semiliguda in Koraput district for a thread ceremony.

Strike threat

Bhubaneswar: Truck and bus owners have threatened to launch an agitation if the state failed to revise the existing fare meant for the trucks and buses. “We will wait till the rath yatra is over and then begin an agitation,” said a member of the All Orissa Bus Operators’ Association. Commerce and transport minister Sanjeeb Sahu, however, said: “The technical committee is now examining the issue. After they submit their report, we will take a decision.”
