Power failure in cities

Bhubaneswar: The twin cities of Cuttack and Bhubaneswar on Thursday suffered power failure due to thunder squalls also brought down the daytime temperature. While the daytime temperature in the capital city was 37.1 °C, Cuttack was having 36 °C. Meanwhile, the central and western parts of the state continue to reel from heatwave like condition with Titilagarh recording 42.2 °C

Concession

Bhubaneswar: Orthopaedically handicapped and paraplegic persons who cannot travel without the assistance of escort, will now be eligible for 25 per cent concession in three-tier AC and AC chair car in all inclusive fares of Rajdhani and Shatabdi trains of the Indian Railways. The same concession will also be admissible to one escort of the passenger. The concession will be admissible on tickets purchased on and after June 1. In case of tickets already issued for travel on and after June 1, refund of difference of fares will not be admissible. The concession for senior citizens (female) will be applicable to woman of 58 years of age. The element of concession will, however, continue to remain at 50 per cent. It has also been decided to increase the element of concession in case of male senior citizens from 30 per cent to 40 per cent. The minimum age will, however, continue to remain of 60 years.

Dowry death

Bhubaneswar: The husband of a woman along with his brother and mother were sent to jail on Thursday after their bail pleas had been rejected by a local court. They were arrested for dowry torture and murder of 32-year-old Sanjukta Das on Wednesday, who was found hanging from the ceiling of her in-law's house. The accused were identified as Hemanta Mohapatra (35), the husband, his brother Basant Mohapatra and their mother Bhabini Mohapatra. Sanjukta's family members had lodged a complaint with the police alleging that she had been murdered by her in-laws for dowry.

Farmer dies

Berhampur: Laxman Sethi (46) a farmer of Satakutuni village in Ganjam district and two of his bullocks were killed on Gurunthi-Kushasthali road after lightning struck on them at 7.30am on Thursday. Lightning struck them when they were on way home. Thirty electric poles and a large tree were uprooted, thatched roof of 53 houses and two asbestos roofs were damaged when rain accompanied by strong wind lashed Haradakhandi area situated on the outskirts of Berhampur. .

Surgery

Bhubaneswar: Seven-year-old Hiramani, a tribal girl from Mayurbhanj district, got a new lease of life following a marathon operation by the surgeons at S.C.B. Medeical College and Hospital, Cuttack on Thursday. he was having black skin with hairy overgrowth on both sides of her cheeks. Before Hiramani’s success story, the plastic surgeons of S.C.B. had also helped a girl from Boudh with similar condition. Hirmani’s parents are happy as she can now go to school.
