40,000 solar lanterns

Bhubaneswar: Unicef will provide 40,000 solar lanterns to tribal schools in state. This was announced by the SC/ST department (SSD) commissioner-cum-secretary Santosh Kumar Sarangi here on Monday. Sarangi said his department had requested Unicef to arrange for solar lighting systems in remote adivasi schools and hostels. Fifty solar lanterns shall be given to each higher secondary school and Ekalavya School, while other schools would get 20 lanterns each. The solar lights will be installed in around 1, 618 schools.

Property list

Bhubaneswar: As many as 22 IPS officers in Orissa have not submitted their property list, said the website of the government of India's personnel and training department. Among these, 12 officers claimed to have already submitted their property list and expressed their ignorance as to why their name was listed.

Children’s fair

Bhubaneswar: The annual Shishu Mahotsav organised by the school and mass education department will begin on November 12. Titled Surabhi, this festival will go on for three days and include a host of programmes and competitions. Students from primary and secondary schools from 30 districts of the state are expected to participate in it.

Award

Bhubaneswar:Scientists from the Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture (CIFA) won the Krushakbandhu Team Award at the World Food Day programme organised by the Orissa Krushak Samaj, a unit of Bharat Krishak Samaj, New Delhi — an organisation involved in championing farmers’ causehe CIFA is leading a consortium project, which is aimed at improving livelihood of 3,000 farm families in Sambalpur, Mayurbhanj and Keonjhar district since last two and a half years.

Animal killing

Bhubaneswar: The Puri district administration on Monday passed a ban against offering animal sacrifice at Biragovindpur pitha. The district collector has passed official orders saying that there would be no “manasik bali” at the religious site hereafter and that any such attempt would be punishable under the law.

Monsoon

Bhubaneswar: The met office on Monday confirmed that southwest monsoon has withdrawn from the state. “The southwest monsoon has further withdrawn on Monday from the remaining parts of Orissa and thus it has withdrawn from the whole state of Orissa,” said director-in-charge, Bhubaneswar met office S.C. Sahu.

Two arrested

Bhubaneswar: The city police on Monday arrested and produced in court two persons in connection with the gang rape of a minor girl inside a Baramunda bus last Wednesday. The accused have been identified as Bikash Behera and Narayan Behera.
