Bhubaneswar: A two-day seminar organised by the Nikhil Bharat Odia Adhyapak Sammelan here demanded for the use of Oriya as a compulsory subject in all schools, colleges and government offices in the state. Expressing concern over the diminishing interest of students in opting for the language, the participants blamed the faulty policies of the state government for not being able to raise interest on Oriya among the people of the new generation. The seminar has also decided to present a memorandum containing a list of demands to the governor. Keonjhar: Ghatagaon Police on Sunday arrested 42-year-old Uttar Meher of Bargarh who confessed to poisoning his wife and six children to death before attempting to commit suicide himself. He has been charged under Sections 302 and 309 of the Indian Penal Code. Earlier, Meher confessed to his abetment to suicide of his wife and six children, including his four daughters, and told them about the compulsions of his acute poverty behind the drastic step. He is still under medical supervision at hospital in Ghatagaon. Jajpur: Two persons, including a soldier and a pedestrian, were killed on spot and another one was injured in two separate road accidents in Jajpur district. Narayan Chandra Sahu (60), a resident of Ganabag, was crushed to death after being run over by a speeding truck near Gobindapur village under Kuakhia police station limits on Bari-Kuakhia road while he was returning home from local market on Saturday night. In the other incident, a rider was killed and pillion rider injured seriously when the motorcycle on which they were riding was hit by a truck near Bhanga Bridge on National Highway-5. The deceased has been identified as Jagabandhu Nayak (24) of Purusotampur village. The injured is undergoing treatment at the Sriram Chandra Bhanja Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack. They were returning home from Bhubaneswar when the accident took place, said sources in the police.
