The Aam Aadmi Party removed Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha from the post of the deputy leader of the party in the Upper House.

On Thursday, a letter was sent to the Rajya Sabha secretariat naming Ashok Mittal, the founder-chairperson of Lovely Professional University, who was elected unopposed to the Upper House from Punjab. He told PTI, "Everyone gets time to speak in our party; it is a democratic process. Raghav Chadha will also be given time to speak in the Rajya Sabha in the future."

The AAP has also requested the Rajya Sabha secretariat to exclude Chadha from the list of speakers.

Sources said the 37-year-old Chadha has been defying the party’s line on the floor of the House on a number of occasions in recent months.

When the impeachment motion was moved against the chief election commissioner Gyanesh Kumar on March 12 signed by 128 MPs from the Lok Sabha and 63 from the Rajya Sabha, Chadha, a Rajya Sabha MP from Punjab, had reportedly refused to sign.

Sources said on several occasions Chadha preferred to stay back in the House though Opposition members including those from the AAP walked out.

Chadha has kept a low profile within the AAP following its loss in the 2025 Delhi elections, turning his attention instead to broader public concerns, such as advocating public causes.

Sources said Chadha preferred to keep mum when AAP founder Arvind Kejriwal and former deputy chief minister of Delhi Manish Sisodia’s acquittal in the liquor scam. He was also absent from a recent news conference and public meeting addressed by Kejriwal against the BJP.

“He has been pursuing his own agenda,” said a source.

Chadha made headlines recently for his call to make paternity leave a legal right in India. He opined that while both parents are congratulated for their child’s birth, caregiving responsibility largely falls on the father. He stated that parenting responsibilities, including caregiving, should be equally shared, and the laws must reflect that.

His agenda on passengers paying extortionate rates for food at Indian airports led to the implementation of the low-cost counters at various airports like ‘Udaan Yatri Cafés’ to allow passengers to enjoy affordable food while travelling, a move that has been described as a win for consumer rights.
