Lion dies at Nandankanan

Bhubaneswar: A 20-year-old male lion on Friday died at Nankanan Zoo here this morning. Though the lion died due to old age, for last one month it was suffering from liver related diseases. . Prof. Susen Panda, HoD, Department of Animal Pathology in College of Animal Husbandry of Orissa University of Agriculture, who conducted the autopsy on the animal said ``the animal, which was ill for last one month had a tumour in its liver and there was a severe bleeding in its upper belly. Old age could also be a reason behind the diseased condition as generally lions have lifespan of 20 years.’’

30-lakh loot

Bhubaneswar: Unidentified men looted Rs 30 lakh from an ICICI bank vehicle in Ambapani in Kalahandi. t least 15 miscreants intercepted the cash laden van, while it was on its way to one of the branches. Two persons have been arrested in connection with the case the police said.

Maoists held

Bhubaneswar: The Rourkela police on Friday arrested two Maoists. They have been identified as Ajaya Kumar Sahu and Sadasiba Mahato. The duo was involved in the Bandhamunda railway cabin blast, the police said. arlier six persons were arrested in this connection. They have been forwarded to court.

Two killed

Bhubaneswar: Two persons were killed in a freak road accident at Bargarh. The mishap took place when the vehicle in which the victims were travelling turned turtle, killing the duo on spot. Five others who were travelling in the vehicle were also left injured. ll the passengers were part of a jatra troupe and were on their way to Kuchinda. The injured have been admitted to the hospital.

Balangir: Balangir sadar police on Friday arrested owner of R.K. Rice Mills, Sameer Agrawal for assaulting a farmer. Agrawal was remanded in judicial custody after a Balangir court rejected his bail plea. Farmer Jogeswar Patel of Bargaon village had come to the government mundi to sell his paddy. He was however asked to hand over his paddy at R.K. rice Mills in Odiapali near Balangir. However, Jogeswar opposed mill owner Agrawal when he was trying to cheat. This led to a scuffle and the farmer was left injured. He has lodged an FIR against the mill owner last evening.

Eviction

Bhubaneswar: Residents of the Saktinagar basti in Rourkela on Friday took to the streets demanding proper rehabilitation. Protesting the recent eviction drive launched by the district authorities, the locals rallied through the street shouting slogans. They later presented a memorandum to the district collector.
