Naveen’s plea for crop plan

Bhubaneswar: Chief minister Naveen Patnaik on Friday directed officials to formulate a contingency plan for the upcoming “Rabi” crops keeping an eye on the current loss of crops. He also asked the authorities to store seeds and to look after the lift irrigation projects. The decision was taken at a high-level committee meeting at the secretariat to assess the present status of rainfall and crop cultivation.

New teachers

Bhubaneswar: State government will recruit 2000 siksha sahayaks (para teachers) in schools run by scheduled caste and scheduled tribes development department. The decision came on the wake of significant rise in the enrolment of students in these schools. The maximum numbers of recruitment will be done in Mayurbhanj district with 285 posts followed by 148 posts for Nabarangpur district. The number of students enrolled in these schools has increased to 3.6 lakh from 2.7 lakh during the year 2011..

Protest threat

Bhubaneswar: Nurses under the banner of Orissa Nursing Employees’ Association have threatened ceasework from the end of October if their demands are not met. Their 10-point charter of demands includes creation of new posts, provision for dress allowance, allotment of quarters and so on.

Auto demand

Bhubaneswar: Autorickshaw drivers in the state have threatened an agitation on August 23. They are demanding proper facilities and comprehensive policies such as health insurance and health benefits.

Four freed

Bhubaneswar: Four suspected Maoist undertrial prisoners were released by a fast-track court in Rourkela for lack of evidence against them. They had been arrested by Koida police for their alleged involvement in the murder of CITU leader Thomas Munda.

Rain forecast

Bhubaneswar: Met officials on Friday warned of heavy to very heavy rainfall at one or two places in the interiors and coastal parts of the state in the next 48 hours. Intermittent rain continued on many parts of the state on Friday following the low-pressure formed over Bay of Bengal.

Traffic chaos

Bhubaneswar: Traffic came to a standstill on Janpath on Friday evening as the engine of a bus stopped working at Master Canteen. Close to a hundred vehicles, including two-wheelers and four-wheelers, were found stranded on both sides of the road from Ram Mandir Square to Rajmahal Square for more than one hour. raffic police faced stiff challenge to clear the chaos as the ongoing flyover construction and road-widening works near Rajmahal Square made things worse. Senior traffic police officers rushed to the spot. Traffic situation became normal after the bus was removed from the road by the police.
