Student commits suicide

Keonjhar: A 19-year-old engineering student allegedly committed suicide by consuming cloroquin tablets here. The student, Asutosh Samal of Keonjhar School of Engineering, located on the outskirts of the town, took the extreme step in his hostel room last night. Asutosh, a native of Singhpur in Jajpur district, joined the electrical diploma course of the college in 2009-10. His body was sent to the district headquarter hospital for post-mortem and his parents were informed about the incident. Police were trying to ascertain the cause behind the extreme step.

Crackdown

Jajpur: Jajpur district administration has launched a crackdown on stone crushers found illegally operating in Dharmasala tehsil area Thursday night. However, they were released after being given warning. The ‘lenient’ attitude of the administration towards the errant stone crushing units has invoked ‘deep resentment’ among the local people. The drive was launched after hundreds of affected residents of two villages ghraroed tehsil office on Thursday demanding immediate stop on the works of the stone crushers. The stone crushers have been operating illegally and causing environmental pollution, they alleged.

Energy police

Bhubaneswar: Superintendent of police Satyabrata Bhoi inaugurated a new energy police station at Angul on Friday. This is the seventh energy police station in the Cesu area. The state government said that it is taking serious actions to check power theft. Nirmal Chandra Nayak has been posted as the inspector-in-charge of the new energy police station. The energy police will operate anti-theft squad in Angul and arrest the power thieves under Sections 135 to 140 and 150 of the Electricity Act, 2003 and Section 379 of the Indian Penal Code.
