Police officer held for accepting bribe

Bhubaneswar: Vigilance sleuths on Tuesday registered a case against the officer in charge of Gania police station in Nayagarh, Niranjan Sundaray, for demanding an illegal gratification of Rs 1,000 and 10kg green grams (moong) from one Sudam Charan Parida in connection with a particular case.Sundaray was caught red handed by the vigilance officers at his residential quarter while accepting bribe and was arrested.

Money missing

Bhubaneswar: Tension spread at the post office in Puri's Markendeshwar Sai after people who had deposited their money there complained of irregularities. The depositors alleged that money was missing from most of their accounts. The matter had earlier been brought to the notice of post office authorities and they had assured action. But no action was taken and the depositors today shouted slogans demanding their money.

Two arrested

Paradip: Police on Tuesday arrested two burglars and seized stolen articles hidden in the sea beach near Biju Maidan in the port. The burglars had last week broken into a shop in the Nua Bazar market complex and fled with valuable household articles. he accused duo, Sangram Das and Sangram Nayak, confessed to the crime and were later forwarded to the court, said Anil Mishra, inspector of Paradip police station. Curious crowds thronged the sea beach as police retrieved the stolen articles by digging up the beach.

Godman death

Kendrapara: Mystery shrouds the death of a self-styled baba in a mutt near Keyarbanka under Mahakalpada police station. The body of the godman was found hung from the ceiling fan inside the mutt. The deceased Nirnjan Das was a native of Nirnjanpur under Balikuda block in neighbouring Jagatsinghpur district. “There might be some foul-play in the incident. The exact cause that led to the death would be ascertained after we get the postmortem report,” said sub-divisional police officer Narayan Mohanty.

Ganja seized

Kendrapara: Excise personnel from Cuttack division seized of ganja worth near Rs 2 lakh during a raid in Kalabuda under Patkura police station area on Tuesday. Two narcotics traders including a 35-year-old woman were taken into custody under Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act. Both the accused were forwarded to court after a local court dismissed their bail plea.

Forest rights

Bhubaneswar: The Campaign for Survival and Dignity (CSD), a network of community organisations of tribals and forest dwellers from 22 districts of the state on Tuesday accused the forest department of attempting to undermine the community forest resource rights recognised under Forest Rights Act.
