Bhubaneswar: About five lakh people thronged the Jagannath temple in Puri on Monday to offer prayers on the last Monday of Kartik, a month that is considered auspicious by the Hindus. The administration had made special arrangements to ensure a smooth conduct of the ceremonies. Adequate security was pressed into service. However, serious scuffle were reported between two sections of the servitors threatening to create law and order problem. However, with the administration's intervention, normalcy restored.

Youth held

Keonjhar: A 39-year-old youth of Tolankapada village was arrested on Monday by Ghasipura police for breaking various idols of Hindu deities at Pashimaswar temple at Tolankapada under Anadapur sub-division in the district. The accused, Nalua Das, also destroyed the trident and the temple flag, police said. The accused resorted to the act after being restricted to enter the temple premises for smoking. 'We have nabbed the youth following complaint of the priest. The arrested also admitted that he had committed the crime. Further investigation is on,' said Budhuni Minj, officer in-charge of Ghasipura police station. He was sent to court and later remanded to judicial custody after his bail plea was rejected.

Goons caught

Bhubaneswar: Local residents of Chhatabar Bazar and Madanpur on Monday caught a goon while he was trying to escape with his three aides after stealing gold ornaments worth more than Rs 1 lakh. Later, he was handed over to Chandaka police. Sources said the accused, identified as A. Ravi from Aska, along with his three other friends, looted the gold ornaments by breaking open the motorcycle dickey of a jewellery shop owner Rama Chandra Mohapatra from Chhatabar Bazar.

Rebel in net

Sambalpur: The Sambalpur police on Sunday night arrested a Maoist from Mudtal under Jujomura police limits. Bishi Pradhan, the rebel, had been allegedly hatching conspiracy, harbouring the Maoists, collecting funds for the rebels and providing support to organise Maoist camps.
