Bhubaneswar: Supreme Court lawyer and environmental activist MC Mehta on Sunday visited the medicine ward of SCB Medical College and Hospital and expressed concern over the patients’ plight because of overcrowding. Mehta alleged that the state health department failed to provide adequate and minimum health facilities to the patients. “At a time, when everybody is talking about the GDP and big investments coming to the state, the hospital is overcrowded and the patients are being treated on floor. Chief minister Naveen Patnaik should visit the hospital and see for himself the plight of the patients,” said Mehta. Bhubaneswar: The Orissa Cricket Association has announced a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh for opener Natraj Behera for his double century against Saurastra in the Ranji trophy elite group match at Barabati stadium. Behera’s 209 helped Orissa secure a draw in the match. Orissa managed to score 494 for the loss of seven wickets in reply to Saurashtra’s 545 in the first innings. Bhubaneswar: The BJD on Sunday constituted a seven-member committee to study the party's prospect in the Umerkote by-election, which is scheduled on November 30. The committee members are Surya Naryan Patra, Rabi Narayan Nanda, Bikram Keshari Arukh, Ramesh Chandra Majhi, Jaydev Parida, Dambarudhar Majhi and Aurobinda Dhali. While the BJP has already announced former legislator Dharmu Gond as its candidate for the seat, the BJD and Congress are yet to announce the name of their candidates. Bhubaneswar: A lioness was found dead at the Nandankanan zoo on Sunday morning. The lioness was born in the zoo on October 28, 1987. Sources in the zoo said the death of the 24-year-old lioness was caused because of old-age related ailments and formation of a stone in one of her kidneys. Bhubaneswar: Police have intensified combing operation in the Khaprakhol forests of Balangir. The police have seized Maoist posters and medical kits from Gandhmardan hills. No arrest, however, has been made as yet.
