Strict law to come

Bhubaneswar: After the theft of treasure trove from the Emaar Mutt in Puri came to light, the state government on Tuesday decided to make stringent laws to protect the properties of the various mutts and temples. A committee will be constituted, headed by the chief secretary, to assess the properties of various mutts. Development commissioner, law secretary and a representative of the Endowment Commission will be taken into the committee. Officials will visit Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh to study the various relevant laws. An inventory will be prepared to asses the properties of each temple and mutt, the government decided on Tuesday.

Bill referred

Bhubaneswar: The state Assembly on Tuesday sent the Orissa Municipal Laws (Amendment) Bill to the select committee for its scrutiny after MLAs, cutting across party lines, opposed the bill.he bill wants to increase property tax to more than 20 times. According to the provisions of the bill, people have to pay taxes on land, homes, water and other items.

Cesu revenues

Bhubaneswar: The Central Electricity Supply Utility (Cesu), a private power distribution company, has collected revenue amounting Rs 1537. 26 crore as against the target Rs 1519.78 crore fixed by the Orissa Electricity Regulation Commission. During the last fiscal, the total power purchase cost and other expenses came to Rs 1517.49 crore. Meeting all the expenditures, the Cesu has generated a surplus amount of about Rs 20 crore.

Compensation

Bhubaneswar: The state government has announced a compensation of Rs 50,000 each to the families of those who were killed in lightning in Sambalpur on Monday. Three persons were killed and two others left injured after lightning struck them at Tangarpali of Tura panchayat in Bargarh. The deceased - Belarsingh Herman, Indra Barik and Biki Chatla - were taking shelter inside a temple in Tangarpali when lightning struck them.

Life term

Balasore: A murder accused of Kadandapur Soro was on Tuesday sentenced to life term by district session judge S.K. Pattnaik. The accused, Brahmananda Das (35), along with his other associates, had made a murderous attack on his widow sister Umamani Nayak in June last year following a property dispute. She succumbed to the injuries on her way to hospital.

Student held

Paradip: The Jagatsinghpur district police have arrested a college student on the charge of illegally possessing arms. After a raid on a poultry farm in Tartanga village on the outskirts of Jagatsinghpur district headquarters township, police made the seizure of an unlicensed revolver and other explosive materials. Pravat Ranjan Mahapatra, a Plus Three student of SVM College, Jagatsinghpur, was arrested in this connection.
