Centre wants Krishna

Bhubaneswar: The Centre has sought the service of the former Malkangiri collector R. Vineel Krishna, who shot into limelight after his abduction by the Maoists on February 16. Union minister of environment and forests Jairam Ramesh had said that he wanted Krishna in his ministry. However, the state is yet to take a decision on the central deputation. Krishna is on a leave for the last two months after he was transferred and posted as director of the scheduled caste and scheduled tribes department.

Calcutta port

Bhubaneswar: The state government on Thursday lodged a complaint with the ministry of shipping on the Calcutta Port Trust's (CPT) expansion which would encroach on Orissa’s northern coast. At a meeting convened by the ministry of shipping in New Delhi, a delegation led by Orissa chief secretary Bijay Patnaik on Thursday objected to the expansion of the port.

Teen suicide

Kendrapara: Unable to cope with failure, a 17-year-old college student ended his life two days after the publication of Plus Two commerce stream examination results. The student, Hemanta Kumar Sethy, of U.K. Mahaveer College, had failed to pass the examination and committed suicide on Wednesday. His body was found hanging from a tree in the backyard of his house at Gunthi village under Pattamundai police station area.

Ten rescued

Sambalpur: Railway police rescued 10 persons who were going to Bengaluru to work as daily labourers. Police rescued them from Khetrajpur railway station on Wednesday night. “The labourers were migrating to Bengaluru to work at a construction site,” police said. olice have detained the agents, Ajaya Patra, 55, of Bardai in Khurda district and Laxmidhara Jena, 50, of Ganei in Khurda district in this connection.

Pay stopped

Bhubaneswar: The school and mass education department has decided to stop paying salaries to 83 teachers for not attending a training programme. The training programme was meant for teachers from Nabarangpur, Nayagarah, Mayurbhanj, Koraput and Sonepur districts. The training programme, scheduled to be held from May 10 to June 10, would provide training to 7,608 teachers in six different training centres in the capital.

Assault

Angul: A case has been registered at Talcher police station on Wednesday against Talcher Truck Owners’ Association president Dillip Pani and others for assaulting senior inspector Anil Das and ransacking the Talcher office. Dillip is the younger brother of government chief whip Rabi Narayan Pani. Following the complaint lodged on Wednesday, police conducted raids at the residence of Pani. Das was allegedly attacked for delaying the issue of transit passes required for coal transportation.
