Bhubaneswar: Chief minister Naveen Patnaik on Monday wrote a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh demanding that the state should be included under the restructured Accelerated Power Development and Reform Programme. Naveen stated that by using the restructured-programme funds, many states had been able to reduce the transmission and distribution losses. “The funds are a necessity to improve the existing infrastructure in power sector,” said Naveen.he programme is taken up with the objective of financing improvement of the sub-transmission and distribution network, including energy accounting and metering in the urban areas having a population of more than 30,000.

Riot panel

Bhubaneswar: Justice Sarat Chandra Mohapatra, heading the one-man Kandhamal Commission, on Monday asked the state government to provide him an assessor to expedite the Kandhamal riot cases. Mohapatra placed the demand while home secretary U.N. Behera met him in the commission's office. The commission was set up one day after the riot broke out on August 23, 2008.

Insurance

Bhubaneswar: Following the state government's request, the Centre has extended the submission proposal for crop insurance under the National Agriculture Insurance Scheme. For the non-farmers, it has been extended to August 16 and for the loanees, it has been extended till September 30. Anyone can apply for insurance coverage for the crops within this period.

Molest charge

Bhubaneswar: The principal of a public school at Kalinga Vihar on the city outskirts was arrested on Monday for allegedly molesting teen-aged girl students. On Saturday, the students’ parents lodged a complaint with the Mahila police station. The police said that as the school was closed on Saturday and it was regular holiday on Sunday, they took their time for probe. The principal was forwarded to court.

Truck seized

Bhubaneswar: Local residents on Monday caught a truck laden with cows and handed it over to the police. The incident took place at midnight near Kalpana Square. As many as 40 cows from Sakhigopal were being transported to Calcutta.
