America calling

Swetasini Sabar and Aliva Pradhan from Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS) have been selected for the coaching-cum-selection camp to be held in Rohtak, Haryana, from July 13. The XVI WBSC Junior Women's Softball World Championship is going to be held in Florida, US, from July 24 to July 30. Sports teacher Latanjali Behera will accompany the players to Haryana. 

KIIT and KISS founder Achyuta Samanta congratulated the two girls and wishes them success in the World Softball Championship in the US.

Hockey camp 

Tata Steel, in association with Hockey Australia coaches, organised a three-day hockey camp for youngsters at Gomardih in Kutra block of Sundargarh district. James Liggins, Tom Winter and Pinny Sidhu of Hockey Australia conducted the screening camps following which a hockey tournament was held with the best teams. 

Ten coaching centres are being run by Tata Steel Rural Development Society, Gomardih unit, where 300 boys and girls, between seven and 12 years of age, are being trained. Players of all the centres took part in the screening camp. The four best players from each centre played in the rural hockey meet. 

Chess gold 

Women Fide Master Saina Salonika of Odisha bagged the gold medal in the Under-14 girls category of Commonwealth Chess Championship, which concluded in New Delhi recently. Saina gathered six points by registering five win and two draws in the seven-round tournament. 

Jyostna L. won the silver medal with 5.5 points while Jishitha D won bronze with five points in the same age category. This the third Commonwealth medal for Saina. 

Football action

The FAO Football League is on at Barabati Stadium in Cuttack. A hat-trick goal haul by Bhabagrai Padhiary guided Sports Hostel of Cuttack to a win over Club N Club 4-1 in the league round match held on July 10. Padhiary netted three goals in the 24th, 40th and 69th minutes, Sunil Sardar of Club N Club scored the solitary goal in the 35th minute to reduce the goal margin. In another match of the day, Mangala Club won the match as Azad Hind Club gave a walkover. Kishore Club and Bidanasi Club will meet OGP and Independent Club respectively on Tuesday.
