Bhubaneswar: At least 12 children in Bahadapalli village of Ganjam district have been diagnosed with measles, taking the number of affected persons in the village to 200 in the last two months. A medical team has been sent to the village to assess the situation and collect blood samples.

Kidnap bid

Bhubaneswar: Two goons — Baidyashree Pradhan and Purnha Chandra Swain — tried to kidnap a 39-year-old man, a supporter of energy minister Arun Sahu, near the minister’s residence here on Friday evening.

Highway mishap

Bhubaneswar: One person was killed and another seriously injured as a cement-laden truck going towards Puri hit their motorcycle at Bomikhal on NH-203. Pillion rider Narendra Mallik, 30, a peon in a private company, died on his way to hospital, while the motorcycle driver, Harekrushna Swain, 32, is undergoing treatment at Capital Hospital.

US national

Bhubaneswar: A local court on Friday rejected the bail petition of the US national, who was arrested from the city airport for possessing live bullets. Public prosecutor R.R. Brahma said engineer William M. Hurtubise's bail plea was rejected as his antecedents were yet to be verified.

Lightning

Bhubaneswar: Lightning strikes claimed the life of five persons, 54 cows and 21 goats during a heavy rainfall in various parts of the state on Friday afternoon.

Bike thief

Rourkela: Police arrested a 35-year-old man, who is accused of stealing motorcycles and seized three vehicles from him. Sangram Mohapatra of Contractor Colony in Sector-6 was allegedly involved in many bike theft cases in the town.
