Woman dies at SCB

Cuttack: Tension prevailed at SCB Medical College and Hospital here on Wednesday following the death of a woman inside its labour room because of an alleged negligence of the hospital’s medical staff. The woman, Banita Das, 45, of BDA Colony, Bhubaneswar, died in the afternoon after falling from the bed inside the labour room of gynaecology department of the SCB.

Rajdhani halt

Jajpur: Orissa High Court on Tuesday asked the railway authorities to take a decision for stoppage of Rajdhani Express at Jajpur-Keonjhar Road railway station. While hearing a PIL filed by advocate Jeetendra Pratihari, a division bench of the court comprising chief justice V. Gopala Gowda and Justice Biswanath Mohapatra has directed railway authorities to submit a report on whether it can arrange a stoppage of Rajdhani Express at Jajpur-Keonjhar Road railway station within eight weeks from the date of receipt of a copy of the order. The division bench has also asked the petitioner to send a representation, along with the court order, to the general Manager, East Coast Railway and others to take a decision in this regard.

31 acquitted

Berhampur: The judge of fast track court-II of Phulbani on Wednesday acquitted all the 31 accused in two separate cases of violence in Kandhamal during 2008. Fast track court-II judge Biranchi Narayan Mishra acquitted persons accused in two house torching cases because of lack of evidence. Both the house torching cases were reported barely few days after killing of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad leader Swami Laxamananda Saraswati. About 4,000 houses were burnt and 38 people killed in the Kandhamal riots in the aftermath of Saraswati’s killing.

Molest charge

Sambalpur: Burla police on Wednesday arrested a person for allegedly molesting a married woman at the VSS Medical College and Hospital. The accused has been identified as Manoj Singh, 26, of Bidyut Colony at Burla. The accused had been arrested and booked under sections 294, 354 and 506 of the Indian Penal Code, said Rabindra Mallick, inspector in charge of Burla police station.

Suicide

Rourkela: A 28-year-old married woman allegedly committed suicide by jumping in front of a running goods train near Rajgangpur railway station here on Wednesday. The deceased has been identified as Sweta Bothra. The cause of her committing suicide is yet to be ascertained. Police suspect family dispute to be the cause behind her suicide.

Electrocution

Bhadrak: One person died and another sustained injuries after a vehicle came in contact with a high-tension overhead wire in Bhadrak on Wednesday. The deceased has been identified as Dharanidhar Sahu, the injured person, Muna Mohanty, was rushed to hospital.
