Student murder: Cops nab four

Bhubaneswar: Police arrested four persons in connection with the murder of a 22-year-old MPharm student in Chintamaniswar on August 19. They have been identified as Kamala Chandra Rout, 26, Rajesh Bhadra, 23, Swadhin Swain alias Bapuji, 24, and Muna Rout, 23. A police official said all the four are co-accused in the case and four others are still on the run. They had attacked Manmohan Pradhan with a sharp weapon, killing him on the spot over a suspicion that Pradhan and his friends had influenced their landlord to drive them out of the house.

Lifer for two

Paradip: Two persons, including a woman, were awarded life imprisonment for alleged involvement in an extra-marital relation-induced murder of one Baburam Bhoi at Bajapur village in October 2011. Bhoi’s spouse, Sabita, had extramarital relations with one Sanjay Nath. The duo hatched a conspiracy while Nath stabbed the man to death.

NH blockade

Paradip: Vehicular traffic was disrupted for several hours on Paradip-Daitary Expressway as green card holders squatted on the highway demanding reservation of seats in educational institutions for their children, Rs 1,000 fiscal incentive, home loan, health insurance and rail pass facilities. Transportation of cargo to Paradip port from Keonjhar and Jajpur was also affected due to the agitation.

Launch

Bhubaneswar: Launch facilities to cut-off areas in the state have been suspended in view of a Maoist threat. All the six launch boats have ceased operations putting around 20,000 people to inconvenience.

Sarpanch

Kendrapara: A local court set aside the election of Koro gram panchayat sarpanch for violating the “two-child norm” while filing nomination in the gram panchayat election four years ago. Akshya Patra’s rival candidate Haripada Behera had opposed the nomination. Behera later filed a case in the civil court, which found out that Patra had three children.

NTPC land

BHUBANESWAR: Land acquisition for the National Thermal Power Corporation’s super thermal project at Darlipali in Sundargarh has reached final stages with “receiving possession” certificates for 1,205 acres of 1,274 acres of private land. An official said the Centre had recommended environment clearance for the project last December.
