Protests stall city traffic

Cuttack: Vehicular movement in the high court area was disrupted for nearly two hours on Thursday following a road blockade by a group of advocates in protest against an alleged assault by Bidanasi Police on one of their colleagues, Nayan Kishore Biswal, on Wednesday night.iswal alleged that he had gone to the police station to lodge a complaint against a land broker but he was beaten up by policemen at the police station. On the other hand, the land broker’s wife has lodged a complaint against the lawyer accusing him of misbehaving with her last night. She, along with a few other women, also staged a protest outside the police station demanding his immediate arrest.

Exam blessing

Bhubaneswar: The state government on Thursday announced that there would be no power-cut in the state during the matriculation exams, which is scheduled to begin from February 25.The decision has been taken keeping in mind the convenience of the students, especially those in the rural areas, said an official.

RSS boss visit

Bhubaneswar: Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh chief Mohan Bhagwat arrived here on Thursday on a four-day visit to the state. He will interact with the outfit’s cadres and address a gathering at Baramunda on February 24 before leaving for Nagpur. He also met some eminent persons of the city today.

Hydro-power

Bhubaneswar: The state is planning to have a pumped-storage hydroelectric power station at Upper Indravati. A survey of the 600-megawatt pumped storage project has already begun.peaking at a seminar on hydro-power and sustainable development in Bhubaneswar, chief minister Naveen Patnaik said the state was planning to come up with some pumped storage schemes to meet huge peak-hour deficit.

Lawyers’ protest

Bhubaneswar: The Orissa High Court Bar Association on Wednesday decided to cease work for two days from Friday. The general body of the association resolved to cease work for two days and urged the director general of police to inquire into and take immediate action against the inspector in charge and other erring officials of Bidanasi police station involved in the assault on a lawyer — Nayan Kishore Biswal,” said a resolution passed by the Bar Association.”

Agitation

Bhubaneswar: The private block grant college teachers have announced that they would launch a civil disobedience movement from Friday. he agitating teachers have been demanding equal work for equal pay and salary on a par with their counterparts in government colleges.

Appointment

Bhubaneswar: The state government on Thursday decided to appoint block education officers in all 314 blocks of the state. School and mass education minister Rabi Narayan Nanda in Assembly announced this. Nanda said the appointment process for the above posts was on.
