Odissi stalwarts’ statues unveiled
Bhubaneswar: Statues of prominent Odissi gurus Pankaj Charan Das and Debaprasad Das were unveiled at the Utkal Sangeet Mahavidyalay on Wednesday in the presence of culture minister Maheswar Mohanty, health minister Damodar Rout and culture secretary Ashok Tripathy. Another statue of literary figure Sarala Das was also unveiled at the Bhanja Kala Mandap on Wednesday. Bhubaneswar: A proposal to convert three colleges in the state into unitary universities was mooted on Wednesday. The colleges are Ramadevi Women’s College in the capital, Gangadhar Meher College in Sambalpur and Khallikote College in Berhampur. he district collectors concerned have been asked to identify 50 acres each for the proposed universities. Bhubaneswar: Homeguards across the state launched a two-day cease work from Wednesday demanding a hike in remuneration and to stop “illegal” retrenchment. he 17,775 homeguards have threatened to stage protests outside the Assembly if the authorities did not meet their demands by the end of their agitation on Thursday. Berhampur: Three goons killed a 60-year-old widow on Tuesday night and looted 45 grams of gold ornaments from her house at Haridakhandi area within the limits of Bada Bazar police station. he incident occurred when the victim, K.Janaki Reddy, and her family members were sleeping. Police suspect the goons strangulated her as her neck bears a deep cut. The body was sent to MKCG Hospital for post-mortem. Cuttack: Malgodown police nabbed four members of the Hyder gang during a raid at a deserted place near Jobra on Tuesday night. The accused are Abdul Istiyak Khan, Bikash Sethy, Pradeep Sahu and Deepak Nayak. The police said Khan, the adopted son of gangster Hyder, is one of the accused in the 2007 abduction and murder of businessman Rashmi Ranjan Mohapatra. Bhubaneswar: Kalahandi police on Wednesday arrested four persons for their involvement in a fake recruitment racket. They had floated a job advertisement in the name of Vedanta group and collected money from gullible job seekers. Cash worth Rs 35,000 was collected from their possession. Sambalpur: A Plus Two student of Sandilya College committed suicide on Wednesday after she was expelled for misconduct at the G.M. College exam centre. The girl, Payal Sahu, died after taking poison, police said. Bhubaneswar: Government Railway Police on Wednesday recovered the body of a 22-year-old woman from the Lingaraj Vihar railway tracks. The police said the woman, who is yet to be identified, committed suicide by jumping in front of a train. Bhubaneswar: Revenue divisional commissioner (central) Arabinda Padhee on Wednesday launched the standardised district portal of Puri (http://puri.nic.in). He said the portal contains vital information on the district, various government offices and line departments executing developmental schemes.
