Rape arrest

Bhubaneswar: Mahila police arrested a 37-year-old man for allegedly raping a 35-year-old domestic maid at gunpoint in Samantarapur on September 10. Niranjan Swain alias Nanda hails from Astarang in Puri. The police said he was involved in various cases of dacoity and burglary.

Fraud land

Bhubaneswar: The economic offence wing of crime branch has started the process to attach properties of fraudulent deposit collection companies including Artha Tatwa Group against whom cases have been registered. Once completed, the police will propose to the government for their asset confiscation.

Maoist camp

Bhubaneswar: Security personnel seized ammunition from a Maoist camp in Siriguda forests in Nuapada district. A joint team of CRPF, district voluntary force and local police came across the camp after launching a combing operation in the forest and seized 14 tiffin bombs, four detonators and four live cartridges.

Lawyers to join work

Bhubaneswar: Lawyers of Orissa High Court have decided to suspend their ongoing agitation and resume court work from November 18. The High Court Bar Association had launched a month-long strike in protest against the recommendation of chief minister Naveen Patnaik to the law ministry for a permanent high court bench in western Odisha.

Cold wave

Bhubaneswar: Cold wave conditions swept interior parts of the state with Phulbani recording the lowest temperature of 8.2 degrees Celsius. The mercury dip is attributed to northerly and north-easterly winds, said the weatherman. The cold wave would continue in Kandhamal district till Sunday.

Writer dead

Bhubaneswar: Eminent writer Gayatri Basu Malik died in her residence here following old age-related ailments. She was 83. A winner of Odisha Sahitya Akademi, her best-known work is the story of Odia film Kaberi, which fetched her a state award in 1984.
