Congress demands CBI probe

Bhubaneswar: Odisha Pradesh Congress Campaign Committee chairman Srikant Jena on Friday urged the CBI director Ranjit Sinha to start a suo-mottu inquiry into the mining scam.n a letter to Sinha, Jena said the Justice M.B. Shah Commission, which inquired into the illegal mining scam, had also pointed out how the mineral wealth of the state had been illegally plundered by the mining mafia under the watchful eyes of the state government.

Fraud cry

Bhubaneswar: Around 50 agents and investors of Subha Satya Investment Solutions Ltd, an Angul-based deposit collection company, submitted a memorandum with the economic offence wing of state crime branch on Friday to take up the case of Rs 1.15 crore fraud by the company.he agents alleged that though they had lodged a complaint with the local police station seven months ago, no arrests had been made. The company has allegedly collected money through several schemes promising the investors profitable returns.

Vigilance raid

BHUBANESWAR: The excise sleuths on Friday raided residential houses of Sameer Kumar Sasmal, working as a constable in Regional Transport Office in Rourkela on allegations of amassing property beyond his income. Vigilance officials seized a number of four wheelers including two cars, gold ornaments weighing 161 grams and immovable assets including three houses in Bhubaneswar. The total value of movable and immovable assets detected during house search is estimated at Rs 1.27 crore.

Logs seized

Balasore: The forest department on Friday intercepted a van transporting wooden logs on the NH-5 near Jamujhadi and seized the consignment. Driver of the vehicle, Ramesh Jena, 41, of Soro, was arrested for transporting the illegal wood.

Bus mishap

Boudh: At least 34 passengers were injured when the bus in which they were travelling met with an accident on the NH -57 in Boudh district on Friday. Two of the injured are critical. The injured were taken to the Boudh district headquarters hospital and Puruna Cuttack Hospital for treatment.

Poll boycott

Phulbani: Tribal residents of Bilabadi gram panchayat, under Khajuripada block in Kandhamal district, announced on Friday to boycott the coming elections in the state in protest against the state government's failure to build roads in their area.

Man killed

BHUBANESWAR: A 37-year-old person was killed in a road mishap at Infocity Square here on Friday. The incident took place when Debadatta Das, a native of Jagatsinghpur, was travelling on his motorcycle and a car hit him. He was rushed to the Capital Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

Beach festival

Balasore: The two-day winter beach festival at Chandipur will begin on Saturday. Organisers said a number of entertaining programmes had been planned.
