Three girls abused

Kendrapara: Three minor girls, including a six-year-old, were allegedly sexually abused in three separate incidents across the district in the past 24 hours. A 36-year-old man at Manapur village allegedly raped the six-year-old, while a teacher of a government-run primary school at Balia village was accused of molesting a Class V girl on the school campus. he teacher, Muktikanta Swain, evaded arrest after the victim's parents lodged a police complaint. In the third case, a 17-year-old boy, who allegedly sexually assaulted a minor girl at Haladiagada village, was arrested and remanded to court.

Naveen’s aid

Bhubaneswar: Chief minister Naveen Patnaik on Monday announced an assistance of Rs 10,000 to self-help groups that have functioned for over three years and Rs 5,000 deposit money in their accounts. There are nearly 10 lakh women in 4.8 lakh self-help groups across the state. The money will be disbursed in the financial year 2013-14 to empower the groups and enhance their capacities.

Sentenced

Kendrapara: Judicial magistrate first class court here sentenced three offenders to five years rigorous imprisonment, seven months after the trio waylaid an insurance company manager and robbed him of cash at gunpoint last March. Prosecution counsel Saroj Kumar Jena said the court had found Debashis Nayak, Suryakant Sahu and Brundaban Jena guilty and pronounced the punishment under sections 392 and 363 of the Indian Penal Code.

Security lapse

Paradip: Police are probing the alleged lapses in security cover extended to Assam governor J.B. Patnaik, who was on an official visit here on February 6. Patnaik travelled about 40km through the NH-5 (A) via Kendrapara. However, instead of four-tier security pilots, single police security pilot accompanied the governor cavalcade while fire brigade and ambulance were not engaged on the route.

Bail rejected

Bhubaneswar: R. Udaygiri judicial magistrate first class court in Gajapati district on Monday rejected the bail application of Maoist interlocutor and convenor of the Jan Adhikar Manch Dandapani Mohanty, who was arrested on Friday on charges of involvement in Maoist ctivities.

Tension

Bhubaneswar: Tension gripped Institute of Technical Education and Research, a premier engineering college here, after unidentified youths had attacked two students. A college bus was also damaged in the incident. An FIR has been lodged with Khandagiri police and the injured students admitted to hospital.

One arrested

Bhubaneswar: Balasore marine police arrested a person on rape charges. Rajesh Majhi was nabbed after a 52-year-old victim, a native of Basta area, said he had raped her on Saturday night.
