Hearing on bail petition

Bhubaneswar: The second additional sessions court fixed January 15 to take a decision on the bail plea of Hi-tech group chairman Tirupati Panigrahi and two directors in the Bhagya Nagar project scam. The court on Thursday conducted bail application hearing. Panigrahi along with Tirupati Choudhury and Madhusudan Panigrahi was arrested on December 25 for cheating a man of Rs 1.80 lakh and threatening him. The court had earlier rejected their bail pleas.

Ganja arrest

Berhampur: Excise officials on Thursday arrested three persons and seized 25kg of ganja, two motorcycles when they were transporting the contraband. Akash Chowdhury and Kintu Chowdhury from Calcutta and Prabhakar Gamango from Gajapati were transporting the ganja from Gajapati to Bhubaneswar on their bikes.

Solar energy

Bhubaneswar: The state government plans to generate 80MW of solar power by 2016, which includes setting up of solar districts to produce 50MW within the next one year, said state science and technology secretary D.N. Gupta.

Appointments

Bhubaneswar: Former minister and MLA Prafulla Samal has been elected as president of the Odisha Private Engineering Schools' Association while Saroj Sahoo has been re-elected as its secretary. The new office bearers, who were elected in the general body meeting on Thursday, will hold office for three years.

CPI meet

Bhubaneswar: The national executive meet of the Communist Party of India will be held for the first time in the capital on Friday, said a press release from Bhagabati Bhavan, the state party headquarters.

Jumbo probe

Bhubaneswar: A central team to inquire into the recent killings of six elephants on a railway track in Ganjam has slammed the railways for not acting with caution in an area frequented by animals. The team said in its report that the Coromandal Express was running at 110km per hour when the accident near Subalaya village took place on December 30.
