Pintu joins BJP

Bhubaneswar: Following the footsteps of Sritam Das and Pinki Pradhan, another Odia film actor, Pintu Nanda, joined the BJP on Monday. The actor said he was inspired by the ideology of BJP'’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi and would work for the development of the people in the state.

Train extention

Bhubaneswar: Minister of state for railways Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury flagged off the extension of the Bhubaneswar-Bhawanipatna-Bhubaneswar Express to Junagarh and inaugurated the Junagarh station building through video conferencing on Monday. alahandi MP Bhakta Charan Das said that the extension of the train would definitely provide better communication facilities between Junagarh and Bhubaneswar.

BMC hearing

Bhubaneswar: The municipal corporation here has decided to hold public grievance hearings at 11am every Monday. This hearing will be attended by all senior officers, said an official release. The arrangements have been made with the intention of providing quality civic facilities to the citizens and effective redress of their grievances.

Bhushan tension

Dhenkanal: Tension ran high at the Bhushan Steel plant at Kantabania near Meramundali of Dhenkanal district following the death of a labourer on Monday afternoon. he identity of the deceased was not immediately known. he mishap took place at the plant’s coal washery unit. Following the incident, the labourers demonstrated in front of the plant’s main gate demanding compensation to the family of the deceased.

Highway firing

Jajpur: Two unidentified assailants shot at a 30-year-old man at Padmanavpur on the Chandikhole-Paradip express highway on Monday evening. The victim, who is critically injured, has been identified as Prakash Sethy of Rajnagar area in neighbouring Kendrapara district. The incident took place when Sethy was travelling on his motorcycle to his native from Chandikhole along with his friend.

Ombudsman

Bhubaneswar: Reserve Bank chief general manager Bijay Kumar Mishra has been appointed as new banking ombudsman for Odisha. Mishra has been working at the Reserve Bank of India since 1984. Prior to his present assignment, he had worked at several regional offices of the RBI including Bhubaneswar, Patna and the central office in Mumbai.

Strike

Malkangiri: The dawn-to-dusk Malkangiri bandh call given by the Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC) paralysed life in the district on Monday. All trading establishments, post offices and nationalised banks remained closed while passengers and transport vehicles remained off the roads. Hundreds of Congress workers, led by Congress MP Pradip Majhi, urged people to make the bandh a success.

Two killed

Rourkela: Two members of the People's Liberation Front of India (PLFI) were killed here allegedly by Maoist cadres on Monday evening. More than 20 Maoist cadres allegedly converged at Mamabhagna village and dragged out Bijaya Tudu and Rosan Soren and killed them by slitting their throat open.
