CM acts tough

Bhubaneswar: Chief minister Naveen Patnaik on Saturday expelled former Khandapara panchayat samiti chairman Sisir Kumar Sahu from the party for anti-party activities. He also suspended Dhamnagar panchayat samiti chairman of the BJD, Ashok Kumar Nayak, from the party on similar charges.

Liquor shops

Bhubaneswar: The state government on Saturday decided to initiate steps to close down around 1,712 liquor shops within 500-metre radius of national and state highways by March 31 in view of a Supreme Court order in this regard. A review meeting in this regard was held under the chairmanship of chief secretary Aditya Prasad Padhy. Official sources said the state government would incur a loss of about Rs 1,100 crore by closing down the liquor shops.

Mahima case

Angul: Police will bring managing director of Odisha Stevedores Limited Mahimananda Mishra on remand to 
interrogate him in connection with a firing incident in the Talcher coalfield area in 2011. The Talcher court has given one-day remand permission to the police on its request to bring Mishra who is currently in Paradip jail. 

Road mishaps

Sambalpur: A girl died after being hit by a lorry near Harichandanpur College Square in Keonjhar on Saturday morning. The deceased was identified as Monika Sahoo, a Class VIII student. Sources said the lorry hit Monika, while she was returning from tuition. In another incident, two persons were killed and another sustained injuries when a truck overturned at Taptapani Ghati in Ganjam district on Saturday. The truck driver died in the accident.
