Vigilance raids govt officer
Bhubaneswar: Sleuths of the vigilance department on Thursday raided the office and houses of Prafulla Sahu, assistant engineer, Begunia road and buildings division. The raid came after Sahu was alleged to have accumulated assets disproportionate to his known sources of income. The sleuths carried out the search operation simultaneously at four places, including his residence, in-laws' house in Khurdha Town, paternal house near Nachuni and his office.
Pak nationals
Paradip: The Coast Guard detained two Pakistan nationals for allegedly using banned satellite phones at sea in Paradip. Police have seized the black box of the ship and launched a probe into alleged illegal activities by them in Indian coastal towns. Further course of action will be taken after a probe.
Shops gutted
Cuttack: Two shops were gutted and property worth lakhs reduced to ashes when a fire broke out near Ravenshaw University on Wednesday. Besides, two cars parked near the shops were also damaged in the fire. Sources said a plastic products shop caught fire at 1.30am and the blaze later spread to another shop. A fire-fighting team rushed to the spot and doused the flames with the help of residents from the locality.
Job scam
Bhubaneswar: Nearly 200 people have allegedly fallen victim to a major job racket in Khurda. According to sources, Mega Consultancy Tours and Travels has allegedly duped various job aspirants of Rs 30 lakh by promising them lucrative jobs in the Gulf. The company had set up its offices at Mukundaprasad and hatched a plan to dupe job seekers through its agents. The scam was unearthed on Thursday when the victims turned up at their office to collect documents necessary to make the trip.

Koraput: Admissions to Saheed Laxman Nayak Medical College and Hospital in Koraput will begin from this academic session once it obtains permission from the Centre. This decision came after a Medical Council of India team approved the institute.
