Cuttack, June 9: The BCCI today announced the list of venues for India's upcoming home season with six new Test centres, but the city's Barabati Stadium has once again failed to make the cut.
It will, however, host a One Day International (ODI) match between India and England next January.
"Barabati has not been accorded Test venue status because of the bottle-throwing incident during a T20 International last October. But, it will host the second ODI between India and England," said Odisha Cricket Association secretary Ashirbad Behera.
Behera said the BCCI was yet to prepare the fixture list for India's upcoming home series against England. But, it had selected Cuttack as the venue for the second ODI.
The BCCI has included Rajkot, Vizag, Pune, Dharamasala, Ranchi and Indore as the six new Test venues at a tour programmes and fixtures committee meeting in Mumbai.
In 2014, a three-member committee of the BCCI had inspected the stadium's infrastructure and had expressed satisfaction with the facilities available.
However, the bottle-throwing incident during its maiden T20 International between India and South Africa in October 2015 had created problems in according Test status to Barabati. But, OCA officials still remain optimistic that it will be recognised as a Test centre on the basis of the committee's report.
"We will approach the BCCI again for Test centre status for Barabati at the next general body meeting in September," Behera said.
Behera is also hopeful about organising a Test match here because the BCCI was yet to decide the venue of the proposed one-off Test between India and Bangladesh in 2017.
"We are happy that Barabati has been allotted an ODI match in January after a two-year gap. This is a moral booster for the OCA. Earlier, fans had to travel to Calcutta to watch matches," said cricket expert Pawan Agarwal.
Agarwal said since the stadium was equipped to seat 45,000 spectators, he was hopeful of being awarded a Test match shortly.
On the other hand, drawing lesson from its past experience, the association has decided to ban water bottles during the match between India and England. Senior officials said, disposable glasses and adequate arrangements for drinking water will be made in various galleries, while tickets will have a numbering system this time as well.
