Nod sought for surplus budget

The civic body has asked the state government to approve Rs 310.93 crore surplus budget for the next fiscal.

Cuttack: The civic body has asked the state government to approve Rs 310.93 crore surplus budget for the next fiscal.

Municipal commissioner Bikash Ranjan Mohapatra on Thursday said the budget submitted to the government after approval of the municipal council expected a revenue receipt of Rs 312.07 crore and an expenditure of Rs 310.93 crore.

The civic administration claimed it to be "pro-people" budget estimate for better civic amenities, including health and sanitation facilities. About 22 per cent of the budget (Rs 69.56 crore) has been allocated to improve the basic services, an official said.

The Cuttack Municipal Corporation has allotted Rs 8.72 crore for public convenience that includes improvement of roads, drains and street lights.

While Rs 6.23 crore will be spent on procurement of purchase of electrical materials, installation and maintenance, Rs 1 crore will be to buy and maintain new vehicles and machineries.

The budget has allotted bigger funds for mosquito control, improvement of public health and better sanitation. The amount has been raised to Rs 58.22 crore from last year's Rs 51.78 crore. The allocation for sanitation work is Rs 30 crore.

In the last budget, the civic body had allotted Rs 1.9 crore for mosquito control. The amount has been increased to Rs 3.3 crore.

Around 67 per cent of the projected receipts in 2018-19 budget estimate is expected to come in form of grants, contributions, loans and subsidies.

According to the budget estimate, Rs 92.49 crore has been allotted for various major projects. Administrative and establishment expenses have been pegged at Rs 93.34 crore.

The proposed major projects include supply, installation, operation and maintenance of three five-metric tonne capacity decentralised compost plant and manufacturing of prefabricated toilets and urinals in Cuttack under the Swachh Bharat Mission.

The civic body seeks to undertake projects that include a LPG-based crematorium, rental housing scheme and community centres with multi-gym, construction of community and recreation centres for senior citizens, foot overbridges, second deer park at Naraj, construction of a petrol pump and a modern abattoir.
