Puri, March 2: The Nirbhaya rape case that shook the nation on December 16, 2012, found mention at the two-day National Sexology Summit held here under the auspices of Council of Sex Education and Parenthood International.
The Urology Academic Forum of Odisha and Urology department of SCB Medical College, Cuttack, organised the summit that ended yesterday.
Every year physicians from across India get together at the annual conference of the council to submit and share their best practices in the field of sexology.
"But this mid-term congregation is another effort at sharing our knowledge on focused area in sexology to collectively propagate the message - healthy sexuality for healthy life," said Datteswar Hota, organising secretary.
Chief coordinator Purna Chandra Mohapatra said: "The three lettered word sex stands for three Hs - health, happiness and harmony."
Mohapatra, a well-known gynaecologist, presented a paper on 'sexual satisfaction, virility and fertility' at the summit.
Council president for life M.C. Watsa, 91, said the organisation that started with just 20 members 34 years ago now has 600 members.
Council chairperson Vithal Prabhu said the need for sex education was stressed by the Justice J.S. Verma Committee after the painful incidence of Nirbhaya case that occurred on December 16, 2012 in Delhi.
"In spite of the stringent laws, the incidences of rape, sexual abuse, female foeticde, killings out of one-sided love etc are found to be on the rise. Education on sexuality can only be the remedy," Prabhu said.
