Autorickshaw driver stabbed to death

CUTTACK: One person was stabbed to death near the railway station here on Sunday. The deceased has been identified as Deepak Das (22), an autorickshaw driver of the College Square area.The incident occurred at around 5.20pm. Police said preliminary investigation revealed that Deepak was stabbed in his chest with a sharp weapon when he was playing cards with three others near the main gate of the railway station. e succumbed to his injuries on way to hospital in a mobile police patrolling van. The reason for the assault is yet to be ascertained. olice are also trying to identify and locate three other people who were playing cards with the deceased.

Literary award

BHUBANESWAR: The Seashore Sahitya Akademy Samman, instituted by Orissa-based Seashore Group of Companies, was conferred on eminent writer Mohapatra Nilamani Sahoo at a special ceremony hosted by the Academy at Rabindra Mandap here on Friday. he literary prize, conferred for one’s lifetime contribution to Oriya literature, carries a cash award of Rs 3lakh, a citation and a shawl. oet Brajanath Rath was the winner of the honour last year.

Bar election

CUTTACK: Advocate Biswa Mohan Patnaik has been elected as the new president of the Orissa High Court Bar Association. The elections were held on Saturday. Of the 3,794 members of the Bar, 2,277 cast their votes. mong those who were elected from the 41 candidates contesting for different positions include Lalatendu Samantaray (secretary), Sadayalaxmi Patnaik (vice president), Pranab Ranjan Chatoi (joint secretary), Soubhagya Ranjan Debdas (assistant secretary) and Jateswar Nayak (assistant secretary - library). Nine other contestants were elected to the working committee of the Bar.

Four killed

DHENKANAL: Four people, including a couple and their son, were killed after the autorickshaw they were travelling in collided with a truck here on Saturday. he deceased have been identified as Aditya Behera, Manju Behera and their son Papun Behera. All three hailed from the Ghodadiya village had come to the district headquarter hospital for check-up.he identity of the deceased auto driver is yet to be ascertained.

Alam tribute

BHUBANESWAR: The Orissa Cine Critics Association and the state department of culture paid tribute to renowned singer Sikander Alam, who died earlier this month, through a musical concert at Rabindra Mandap. itled Salam Sikander, the concert saw performances by many veteran and budding singers of the state. irector Prashant Nanda, singer Prafulla Kar and other dignitaries were present at then event.
