Berhampur, Oct. 3: Chief minister Naveen Patnaik inaugurated a academic block near the administrative building of the MKCG Medical College and Hospital here today.

The new block houses eight large lecture rooms, a 1,500-seat capacity auditorium, seminar halls and a host of other facilities.

"Earlier, we had only three large lecture facilities and five small lecture halls, one each in the anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pathology and community medicine departments at the administrative block. We used to face severe shortage of space for even 150 MBBS students. Since the MBBS seats in the college has increased to 250, the new academic block would ease the situation," said principal A.K. Dandapat.

Rasananda Mangual from the department of surgery said the lecture rooms at the administrative block had been insufficient even for 150 MBBS students. "Opening up of a new building is a welcome step."

Rahul Naik, a first-year MBBS student, who attended his first class today in the college, also welcomed the construction of the new academic block. "It would be of great help," Rahul said.

Roads and buildings (Berhampur division I) executive engineer Binod Kumar Padhi said: "The chief minister inaugurated six buildings at the MKCG, including the new academic block. The five other buildings are - a laboratory, two undergraduate hostels and two postgraduate hostels for boys and girls."
