Bhubaneswar: Around 500 youngsters from across the country have embarked on a coastal trekking expedition that was flagged-off from Puri on Tuesday.

The expedition seeks to create awareness about various ecological and environmental issues and promote tourism. National Cadet Corps (NCC) cadets from variousstates will trek through the coasts and forests of the Puri coastal belt and adjoining areas.

From walking barefoot on the beach to experiencing coastal life, the youngsters have a lot to look forward to.

The cadets will also visit the state's various cultural and historical sites and spread the message of Swachh Bharat and environmental protection and conservation.

The trek is being organised by 6 Orissa Battalion, Puri. "Our coastal belt is rich with scenic beauty and there is a lot to explore, such as the lifestyle of fishermen and the wildlife. The younger generations should be aware of it. We would like to promote concepts that are popular in other coastal states of our country through this expedition," said Lt Col Abhay Singh, who is heading the expedition.

During the journey, the cadets also aim to create consciousness among local residents about climate change and the results of environmental degradation. The coastal expedition will conclude on January 23.

Coastal treks have caught the fancy of travel enthusiasts in the state in recent years. Members of the Bhubaneswar Cycling and Adventure Club have been hosting coastal treks since the past year.

Their latest trek took them from Puri to the Chilika sea mouth at Dhalabali inlet last year.
