Bhubaneswar, May 17: Riding the Naveen wave, the BJD made a clean sweep in as many as 13 of 30 districts, including Ganjam, his home turf.

The districts swept fully by Naveen magic were Ganjam (13), Mayurbhanj (9), Jajpur (7), Khurda (8), Bhadrak, Angul and Kalahandi (5 each), Dhenkanal (4), Rayagada (3) and Malkangiri, Budh and Sonepur (2 each). Besides, the BJD had won all but one each seats in Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Keonjhar, Nabarangpur and Sambalpur districts. In Hinjili, Naveen Patnaik defeated his nearest rival, Sibaram Patra of the Congress, by 76,525 votes.

Nandini Devi of the BJD wrested the Sanakhemundi seat from Ramesh Chandra Jena of the Congress and Priyanshu Pradhan, a young physician, snatched Chhatrapur from the CPI. Party workers attributed the success to Naveen’s clean image, populist programmes and above all, the government’s success in fighting Phailin.

Jajpur

Repeating its 2009 Assembly election performance, the BJD retained all the seven Assembly seats and the lone parliamentary seat. Both the Congress and the BJP could not bag a single seat in the district. While five party legislators were re-elected, two others, including Odia film actor Akash Das Nayak, made their debut to the Assembly. BJD candidate Rita Tarai, a new face who replaced sitting MP Mohan Jena, won the Lok Sabha seat by defeating her nearest rival, Ashok Das of the Congress, by over three lakh votes.

Dhenkanal

In 2009 poll, the party had won all but the Talcher seat that went to Independent Braja Kishore Pradhan. But Pradhan this time contested on a BJD ticket and won the seat.

Incumbent MP Tathagat Satpathy achieved a hat trick by defeating Rudra Narayan Pany (BJP). Similarly, the BJD candidates won all the four Assembly seats in Dhenkenal and five in Angul.

Balasore

While Union minister and sitting Congress MP Srikant Jena lost the Lok Sabha seat to the BJD, the party also lost in the Jaleswar and Soro Assembly segments. The BJD could capture all the Assembly seats of the district except Remuna.

Sambalpur

For the first time, a woman candidate, Raseswari Panigrahi (BJD) was elected from the Sambalpur Assembly seat.

“I will work for the overall development of Sambalpur. I will also work for the proper implementation of welfare measure of the Naveen Pattnaik government,” said Raseswari Panigrahi, who was the BJD nominee.

Apart from the Sambalpur assembly segment, the BJD also emerged victorious in the Sambalpur Lok Sabha constituency. BJD candidate Nagendra Pradhan snatched the seat from Amarnath Pradhan (Congress).

Moreover, the BJD has also grabbed the Rairakhol and Rengali Assembly segments. However, the party failed to win the Kuchinda Assembly segment where BJP candidate Rabi Naik emerged victorious.
