Sambalpur, March 4: The municipal corporation today held discussions with the owners of kalyan mandaps, caterers, community halls and tent houses for proper disposal of garbage.

The Sambalpur Municipal Corporation will charge them for irregular disposal of garbage.

More than 50 owners of tent houses, catering units, kalyan mandaps and community halls attended the meeting. These establishments generate a huge quantity of garbage and do not dispose it of in a proper way. The garbage that generates from the functions is often found dumped along roads.

"The meeting was to ensure the proper disposal of garbage is done in a proper manner," said the civic body's additional commissioner Bijaya Kulange.

"These agencies have been asked to intimate the authority about the date and venue of the functions at least three days in advance. They will have to deposit Rs 1,500, and it will be the corporation's responsibility to lift and dispose of the garbage. It has also been decided that the agencies will deposit Rs 5,000 for each event where plastic disposables will be used," said Kulange.

"After depositing the required fee, the event managers will have to dump the garbage at a particular site and civic body's sanitation workers would clean it in the morning. If anyone violates the directive, the corporation will slap a fine of Rs 10,000," he said.

The decision will be implemented from March 15. The corporation has appointed a co-ordinator for this purpose."A huge amount of garbage is generated from social functions. Now, the corporation workers will clean the area. There is nothing wrong in charging a nominal fee from these business establishments," said local resident Seshadev Biswal.
