Angul, June 6: Councillors moved no-confidence motion against the chairman and vice-chairman of the Angul Municipality on Saturday. Both the leaders belong to the Congress.
Sixteen out of 23 councillors have given a notice to this effect to the district collector to summon a meeting where the two leaders should be asked to prove their majority. Official sources said eight councillors had met the collector and submitted the letter. Seven signatories belonged to the Congress.
Despite BJD wave all over the district, the Congress had won the last polls by securing 13 seats. The BJD had bagged seven and the BJP and independent candidates had secured one each. While Binodini Dash was elected as the chairman, Pratap Pradhan became the vice-chairman.
“I am surprised at the move of some our party members after I got to know that they have sided with our opposition groups to dislodge me from the post. Whenever they have come to me with their demands like drinking water sanitation, roads I have always tried to meet those,” said Binodini.
“I hope they will realise their mistake and withdraw their support to the no-confidence notice,” she said, adding that she did not know the intention of the dissident councillors whether to support the BJD or elect another Congress candidate. “I have received the notice signed by 16 councillors of the Angul Municipality for convening of the council meeting so that the chairperson could prove her majority. I am examining the notice and will verify the signatures of the councillors before deciding the date for no-confidence motion,” said district collector Siba Prasad Mishra.
