Bhubaneswar: Infocity police station in the city is proposed to be developed into a model police station.

The move is a part under the initiative of introducing one model police station each in every police district. All such facilities will come up by mid August.

Sources said the model police station status would be given on 28 parameters such as infrastructure, skilled manpower, high rate of conviction, people-friendly approach, effective crime control and quality as well as expeditious investigations.

Police said Infocity police station had been proposed as the model police station in view of the presence of a number of educational institutes in the area.

"The area has been growing leaps and bounds in the past few years. A number of foreign students also stay in the area," said a police official.

Infocity police station had been set up in 2009 and has a jurisdiction of 28sqkm. Several important places, including the KIIT University, Infosys and the Sihkarchandi hills, fall under the police station. The police station caters to the need of more than one 1.5 lakh people. In 2009, it had registered 130 cases, which increased to 139 in 2016.

Deputy commissioner of police Anup Kumar Sahoo said the model police station would have all visitor amenities such as cold drinking water facility and waiting hall. "The police station will also have barrier-free access. All the parameters needed for getting the model police station tag will be completed by August," said Sahoo.

Director-general of police R.P. Sharma had announced the making one police station in each police district as a model facility during the three-day senior police officers' conference in Bhubaneswar in March.

Sharma on Wednesday reviewed the progress of those facilities with concerned police superintendents and range officers through videoconference in Cuttack. Sources said he had assured the officers of providing additional manpower and adequate funds for vehicles and other equipment.
